While some stamp collectors may simply discard this as junk mail, I found the postage paid indicia rather unique in this example: It's a GM (Chevrolet) mailer looking for me to trade-in my car at a local dealer. I'm sure it's just a mailing house that printed these in the tens (or hundreds) of thousands, but found it quite interesting that they apparently used a spray on "PHOENIX AZ" imprint below the preprinted red indicia, while at the same time using a return address with the Chevy logo from Dearborn, MI, even though the mailer contained an ad from a local dealership in Massachusetts.

wt1, I agree, some people may call this junk, but, I don't. When you stop to think how many of these went out in the mail and did end up in the refuse basket and only a few will keep these, such as collectors like you and I. It is the few that survive that will become collectibles in the future.

I noticed that there was no city for the permit printed on the envelope. It could be Chevy made an oops and was trying to save money instead of printing up hundreds and thousands of envelopes. Maybe that is the why for the spray cancel city. |

I searched and didn't find another specific thread for posting these permits, so I hope wt1 doesn't mind if I slide in here... I received this last week from AAA, trying to get us to upgrade our membership status: |

I can understand an eagle, but what's that AAA indicia supposed to represent? The goddess Mercury staring at the American flag? |

Hi wt1,
I think Mercury was a geezer, unless he has gone tranny. The flag looks like it is the old 48 star US flag. Haven't a clue about the ring thingy though. UFO?

Yep, Mercury was a dude. His Greek counterpart was Hermes, who, according to wikipedia, was a protector and patron of travelers (as well as herdsmen, thieves,[2] orators and wit, literature and poets, athletics and sports, invention, and trade).
It looks like there should be a date or zip code in the "UFO"? |

There used to be a Winged Liberty Head dime (issued 1914-1945 I think) with a similar design. It was commonly referred to as a "Mercury" dime despite the obvious misnomer. Here is an image: |

The Mercury dime was what I was referring to in my previous post, suggesting that the Mercury image was depicting a woman rather than a man. However, I understand that the woman featured on that coin is supposed to be depicting Lady Liberty, but with the winged headpiece.
I suppose the postage indicia is more masculine now that I look at it closer. (Mythological characters are not my strong point.) |

Zuzu, I got this in the mail today from AAA. Maybe there is a potential study of AAA postage paid indicia. Dan |

Interesting AAA indicias. It would, however, be helpful if those posting these items could indicate what region of the country the mailing was received. While I assume it's a mail order house that's doing the mailings, it would be interesting to know if these are being received on the East Coast, West Coast, Midwest or Southern US.
By the way, I really like that 1940s era car depicted on the image posted by danstamps54. |
