Nice close-up. I think that is part of a sheet of odd-shaped stamps issued for Letter Writing Week, every year in Japan. Cannot find my catalogue pages right now, buried.

Roman Mosaic of Vichten
September 3, 2007
The mosaic from the Roman villa in Vichten was manufactured around 240 A.D. in a specialized workshop in Trier, where other masterworks of the same period were produced. It depicts in its main section the mythological and literary theme of the nine Muses, daughters of the King of Gods Zeus by the Goddess of Memory Mnemosyne. The large central medallion features Calliope, the Muse of epic and elegiac poetry together with the prince of poets, Homer.
Each of the four elongated octagon stamps captures two Muses, while the central square stamp includes Calliope and Homer.
