Catalogues, 4 volumes (4-6 plus US specialized) a coin catalogue and an antique catalogue. All 5 for $10. Heck, I don't even collect coins or antiques! It was the Langley B.C. library's spring sale of discarded books. The women there could not explain where the first 3 volumes were, but I was the first in on the first day of the sale.

Fantastic BeeSee. I wish our local library would do this more often.

Congrats BC, you're a lucky guy. Not here in Ontario though. I've been trying to get some of the discarded Scotts from my library in Newmarket for years without any luck. The library usually gets new ones every 2 or 3 years even though back in 2011 when the latest were 2007 it was me that went to the circulation department and asked them to finally get the newest issues. I think I was probably the only person taking out the catalogues. At that time I asked if they could let me know when the old ones were being discarded the lady told me that they can't do that. Well the 2011 appeared within a couple of weeks and the old ones disappeared and when I asked what happened to them they said they were put on the discarded shelf where they are available for whatever you want to donate. I was at the library every second day but never saw them. When I went to the library last week I found to my surprise the new Scott 2013 volumes but no 2011. Again was told they went to the discarded shelf and ofcourse they were gone. I wonder, is someone tipping off a friend or relative? |

The two libraries I know that have them...you can not check them out..they are in the reference section only !! probably a good thing or someone would keep them for weeks and possibly pay a fine !! |

When I see the blue 2010's I think of my friend Joe who passed away last March..that what he had..3 of us went to talk to his widow about not doing anything rash about selling his stamps..but Joe used to lock himself in the little stamp room and smoke cigars..the place and of course the albums reek of cigar smoke...imagine what a dealer would say ? |

My library gets a new set every year, which is for reference only. The previous 2 years are in the check-out section and the third set is sold at the spring or fall sale. The last time I got only volume 6 and the US specialized (2009), but I missed the first few days of the sale.
If anyone wants those, they would have to pick them up (Vancouver metro area) - it would cost a fortune to mail them. |

My local library used to have the newest Scotts for reference only and the older to take out.
Starting with the 2011 volumes and now with the 2013 they are available to be checked out. None are just for reference. |

Litho, I just was at the Newmarket library and saw the new 2013 catalogues. I asked the woman behind the desk if they were getting rid of the old ones (2011, they never got 2012) and she looked at me like I had two heads. So I just took my second head, and left! |

Yes the lady at circulation also gave me a funny look when I asked about what happened to the old ones. I was thinking about talking to my town councillor about it because I'm paying a lot of property taxes and the library portion is a large chunk but my wife always says I overreact so I let it be. To be totally fair the library should have an annual or semi annual sale advertised in the local paper so everyone would have a crack at them. |

No sir, I've not been hoarding them. I bring them back when I'm done! Though the middle volumes G-I and J-O seem to be out ALL the time.
And do over react, that's how things get done. |

The World Coin catalog, even if out of date on prices, has a very useful feature. It specifies the silver content, in Troy ounces, of EVERY single silver coin listed. I keep an old one in the back seat of the car, so that if I find foreign silver at the flea market, I can figure out the precise silver weight in ounces, which is the essence of the buy or don't buy decision. |
