Now I am the first to admit I am not even close to being an expert on US cancellations, but this one really struck me as odd. Was this a machine cancel? I do not recall seeing an oblong cancel before. Albany NY, June 30, 1901. yakboomer.

Yes,it is a machine cancel, and not very uncommon.

The Albany NY oval is from a Barry machine. The oval type was used in about 40 large cities in the US, most in the 1897-1901 time frame, with a few hanging on later. They are mostly quite plentiful, since they were relatively high speed machines used in larger cities. Fun collecting area.

I really like that cover and that particular cancel isn't too awful common but it isn't scarce or anything.

I bet either Russ or Kirk could tell you the exact machine that letter traveled through and any number it may have.

Considering it was merely a stove, the Gold Coin Stoves and Ranges did quite a bit of fairly elaborate advertising back in the day as shown on this card:
