Hi,
I've been soaking stamps off of various world album pages that were probably loaded 70 years or so ago.

During this process, it became very obvious that the quality of the stamp paper varies quite a bit from country to country - which I assume is the result of cost and quality paper availability.

Of course my question is, what countries do you find put out the best quality stamps during the classic period?

This is a large topic, but the WW I era and aftermath was particularly affected..

France
The wartime stamps of 1916-20 were printed on poor quality paper(called G.C. paper in the Scott catalogue for "Grande Consommation"). The paper is grayish, and has bits of fiber.

Austria
"Arms" issue 1920-21
Can be found on thick grayish paper.

One of the more interesting examples is the first 1918 issue of Latvia, printed on the back of old German military maps!

I find most of the British Commonwealth countries pretty good. Of course, there were exceptions due to WWII, different types of paper being used, etc.
