Did anyone catch this story in the New Yorker Magazine of April 2, 2013?

An interesting story that SCF members may find an enjoyable read:

Thanks wt1. A nice little snippet of a "collector's" dream.

That is a great story, WT1. Thanks for sharing.

The Krieghoff was the first commemorative stamp I ever bought for my collection direct from the post office (in 1972). It remains one of my all time modern favourites

Thanks for the link to a great little article. I collect stamps for the stories they bring to me. Stories about history, geography, great people and so much more. The quest for a stamp or stamps to add to a collection creates another story to share. Sometimes the eyes of non-collectors do get glaze over, but they just don't appreciate the stories.

Wow I musta missed this story and I have a subscription to the New Yorker. Going to see if I can find that copy but that was a pretty powerful story. Had me on my toes the whole time.

The author of this story, Stuart McLean, is one of Canada's most-beloved storytellers. He has a podcast every week called "The Vinyl Cafe" that is probably one of the most listened radio program in Canada. I heard this story a few weeks ago on one of the episodes downloaded from iTunes.

His webpage is http://www.cbc.ca/vinylcafe/ . I don't recall which podcast had the story about the stamps but the episode on 31 March is entitled "Letter" so it might be that one. His stories are very funny and entertaining and he also has a large American following, those that can access CBC across the border or listen to the podcast.

You can find these podcasts if you search for CBC and/or The Vinyl Cafe on iTunes. Highly recommend them.

Great story! Thanks for sharing. A solid reminder that the sentimental value of our collections probably outweighs the catalogue value for many of us. I started collecting stamps with late father, so for me, working on my collection often reminds me of some great times spent with him.
