Hello ...

I am collecting Israel stamps, and would like to do so by category, e.g. males, females, flora, fauna, airmail, etc. But there are many stamps which seem not to fit into any specific category, and I hesitate to simply group these under 'miscellaneous'. So, please, can anyone collecting Israel stamps offer any suggestions? I would be most appreciative for anything.

Regards,

Sperati.

To be consistent, some stamps will require multiple copies, one example for each of the appropriate topics.

Sperati,

Every stamp has a topic.
Post your Israel stamps here, or give me a Scott number, and I'll happily let you know the subject.
Living in Israel, I may even be able to give you a theme you didn't previously think about !

Hello, Londonbus1. Thank you for your response.

Firstly, I use the Stanley Gibbons catalogue, so am unable to provide Scott numbers.

Secondly, I'm something of a novice at these on-line procedures, so haven't mastered the transfer of stamp images to the screen. (So much to learn – so little time!)

Finally, here are some stamp descriptions that I will have trouble categorising. The SG numbers are probably no good to you, so I have shown the year of issue and the SG description.

1972 – Jewish New Year. (Holy Arks from Italy.)
1976 – Jewish New Year. (Concepts: Truth, Judgement, Peace.)
1985 – Jewish New Year. (Tabernacle Furnishings.)
1990 – Circassians in Israel.
1994 – "No to Violence" Campaign.
1996 – Equal Opportunities for Disabled People.

As to the first three items, I thought "Jewish New Year" was too vague a category, especially since those stamps refer to more specific concepts. On the other hand, I don't want to end up with just a single stamp in any particular category.

So this is a small indication of my problem. Any suggestions you could offer would be very much appreciated.

Regards,

Sperati.

Sperati,

Couple of questions/queries.

Are you only collecting Israel stamps ? I ask this because if you are, putting them into topics/themes would seem a bit of a waste of time. As you said,

If you are including all your stamps, then less specific themes would be best, i.e. for the 1972 new year issue, Ancient Chests would be a possibility.

Can you give a bit more detail on what you collect and how your collection is now.

I do have SG catalogues so no problem with numbers.
If you need help posting pics, let me know.

I'll scan a few of your stamps later and we can discuss it here further.
Others may also have an idea.

Hello, Londonbus1. Thank you for your prompt response.

I have until quite recently concentrated on France and French colonies prior to independence, and I actually have quite large collections of both.

With France, I sorted the collection into what I termed "Aspects of France" and then arranged the stamps into fairly obvious categories. Because there are so many landscapes in the France collection, I sorted them according to regions, and then grouped them under the general heading "La Belle France".

However, now I would like to concentrate on Israel, and because the French collection seemed to work well, I thought I would try that idea here.

I have accumulated about 500 Israel stamps, from 1950 to 2002, sorted according to year of issue, in SG catalogue numerical sequence, and thought it about time I got down to sorting according to my preferred categories.

Yes, I DO need help posting pics!

Regards,

Sperati.

Sperati,

I too am an Israel collector. One of the possible categories for the Jewish New Year stamps could be "Jewish Holidays". That way you could group all of the major (and minor) Jewish holy days of the year, e.g. Yom Kippur, Shavuot, Yom Ha'Atzmaut, etc.

Hello, Yirmeyahu. Thank you for your response.

That's just the sort of suggestion I was looking for. Will put it into operation straight away.

Thank you again.
