i have a dilemma, I have a small lot of Chile classics (see below)which I cannot identify with certainty. Because of paper, shades and watermarks - the values of these stamps varies greatly. What I need is an expert to look at these for me, At $30 a pop, APS's expertizing service does not seem economically worthwhile. Any suggestions? Much thanks!

APS expertising services are cheaper with membership. Also the APS also offers Photo-verification for about $9 where you submit a high-res scan or digitized photo and they give an opinion.

An expertiser worth his salt will not likely charge less than $25. Expertising is hard work even for the experts.

Another option would be these folks who specialize in Spain and Latin America, though they are more expensive.

OK. These stamps were printed in Santiago-Chile by the Post Office Printing Bureau.
It is necessary to check the watermark to identify them :

Small five : Scott 9
Printed between October 1857 to September 1865
This stamp is called "Estanco"
There are many diff. color shades in this issue: red, rose red, carmine red, cinamon, orange, etc.

Large five : Scott 14
Printed between January 1866 to November 1867
This stamp is called "Last Santiago Printing"

there is a note after Scott 14 which states "The 5c rose red (shades) on unwatermarked paper, either wove or ribbed . . . are reprints made about 1870."

I am guessing that this is what my imperf pair above are. Is there a better catalog for this?

Before making the printing of 1866 issues (Scott 14), the Post Office Printing Bureau was made a deep cleaning of the plates, as in the previous years has accumulated much rust and dirt.
To check the quality of the cleaning was made some impressions on unwatermarked paper.

A few years later appeared on the philatelic market these test prints, and are those that are know as "reprints"

These reprints were never postaly used, therefore don't have postmarks.

The paper of these stamps was made by hand and in some stamps watermark is more visible than in others...but the "5" should be there. Test/try with benzine.
Watermark "5" can be found in any of the following positions :

The best catalog on Chilean stamps is the specialized edited by the Philatelic Society of Chile.

I tried benzine - still no watermark.

How about I mail these stamps to you and you can check them? Send me an email with your address! Thanks!

Evan
