The Scott catalog makes the less-than-useless statement "Counterfeits exist" beneath the listings for #Q7-Q15 (1882-1894 issue) and Q16-24 (1895-97).

Can someone provide insight into what the diagnostics are for counterfeits versus genuine stamps for these two issues?

Thanks.

Serrane doesn't have much to say about the 1882 issue except that the originals should perf 15 and the forgeries perf 14; the shades are off; and the forgeries are coarse (grossier...you might be able to translate that better than I).

Unfortunately, there is not a drawing of this issue. I have a few other places I can check.

Nice writeup, scb. The detail about comb perforations is good to know.

Now, where do I store that?

Here is one of the stamps I'm trying to verify. It was in a lot, with an APEX cert saying that it is a counterfeit. It is perforated 15.5 x 14.5 (it might be 14.25, but my perf gauge only goes in half increments).

You will find an example of the 50 centimes in Focus on Forgeries by Varro E. Tyler from Amos Press.

From his example, yours looks to be a forgery. The C. WIENER at the bottom is different on genuine stamps.

That's just it, the "C. WIENER" appears to be all over the map, both on genuine and forged stamps...
