Early Vietnam stamps are rarities and they are not listed in Scott. I was recently offered about 10 stamps mounted on 2 pages at $40,000. I did not buy them and someday I would kick myself not buying them. The primitive characteristics really intrigue me. They are really fascinating. This sheet is not rare but it shows these primitive characteristics. I'd like to know if there are members who collect Vietnam.

I have always been interested in that area. I dont really have anything though. Too costly for me. The nefed stamp show in MA this weekend had a spectacular exhibit of Vietnam. The Viet-Minh material was really interesting. Mostly crude hand printed stamps, block printed covers. Very interesting.

My focus has been totally US postage stamps, but have often considered starting a small collection for a country or movement with a start and a finish. The Ryukyu Islands has interested me in the past, but it is too extensive, and I'd rather keep my interest smaller. Viet Minh stamps would probably more closely fit my interests. It seems to have a specific start and end date. I also saw an eight page album advertised on ebay. Your comment on substantial cost of Viet Minh stamps surprises me, since those listed on ebay didn't seem ridiculously high. I'd be interested in hearing all your observations - pro and con - about collecting them. Look forward to hearing from you. |

fotofila. What stamps are not listed ?. In my Scott and Gibbons, they both list stamps from various parts of Vietnam from 1945/46.

Why would you even consider buying that Viet Nam lot. Is it philatelic passion of potential return on investment? If the latter I think one needs to be very careful these days as the number of collectors is dropping and there is a huge amount of surplus material on the market. If I had been offered that lot I'd have countered with an offer of $500 MAX. |

There's a long timelag between the original post and the bumping of the thread, so the OP may well not see these comments. I have a reasonable collection of Viet-Nam, but some of the early ones, which were overprinted stamps of French Indo-China, have quite high CVs, as have many of those issued between 1946 and the mid-1950s. So I have lots of gaps there. I like the stamps themselves - they give you a sense of the immediacy of the struggle, first against the French, then against the US invasion. They don't turn up too often in the auctions that I follow. |
