I found this cover when searching Jim Forte's Postal History Website. I was intrigued by the postmark as I don't recall seeing it before. In particular, the CDS shows within the circle the date all on one line (and only two digits for the year) and the extended dash between the numeric hour and the "PM" designation. It's also interesting how they crammed the words "JERSEY SHORE" into the top of the CDS, as I don't think any additional letters would fit if they tried. Also, there are eight wavy lines to the "killer" part of the postmark, rather than the usual seven. Can anyone identify what type of machine cancel is shown here?

To add some more interest to the above cover, here's a great period ad for the company in its day: |

I looked and I don't have a CDS like that one in my collection and know even less about it. I know that don't help any. Sorry. I bet Russ would know! On another note: My great great grandfather worked for one of those company's at the powerhouse out at the Avis shops at about that time. John Willits. (Elizabeth "lizzie" Willits- Abernatha) |

The Jersey Shore is a Columbia Machine cancel. That town used a few different subtypes of Columbia machines over a period of several years. |

It begs the question of what type of Columbia machine was used. It carries 8 wavy line killer bars instead of the usual 7. The Columbia rectilinear with horizontal wavy lines cancel too but only the 7 line is depicted oddly? However I believe the clue lies in 2 parts-1.) the bars is more than 7mm away from the dial; -2.) the month, day & year are all squeezed onto 1 line so that can really only leave the Columbia - http://swansongrp.com/macht313.html more specifically - However, it still leaves me wanting as it does not address the 8 wavy line killer. That's a pretty significant difference to just omit don't you think? Edit:I did manage to find an 8 horizontal, straight-line, Columbia killer though. |

Believe it or not, Jim Forte's Postal History Website still has the very same cover for sale as shown in the original post. If you look at their listing it describes the postmark as:
Jersey Shore, Pa. 1918, Columbia Machine Type F1W(8)
I have no idea how to decipher the Columbia Machine Type other than the "(8)" is probably in reference to the number of killer bars. |

No kidding it's still there? and I guess I don't either. I was using Bob Swansons' site to try to nail it down but no such luck. I just may have to bring this poor cover back home soon. |

The Machine Cancel Society published a 7 volume set of books (by Morris/Payne/Holmes) on Columbia machine cancels about 15 years ago, so it is a rather large subject. Each volume is between 250-300 pages, and the type charts alone take several pages, so any online resources probably don't cover all the possible types. It's a fun collecting area, since most material is readily available and relatively cheap. |

Yes I enjoy IDing cancellations and even keep my eyes out for a couple that I want. That sounds like one heck of a resource material book set! |

It's actually now listed as "Jersey Shore, Pa. 1918 Columbia Machine Type F1W(8)" but $10.00 is just a little bit too steep (I think anyway) for that cover. Do you think it's worth the price tag? |

Value is subjective. There are not many Columbia collectors out there (too bad; this company probably produced a wider variety of styles and types than any other company). As a machine cancel collector myself, I will note that clean, complete strikes of many machines are difficult to find. It will probably be hard to find a nicer looking example. For a hometown collection, $10 is not out of the question though it's the sort of thing that might turn up for less somewhere else if you are patient.
Separately, $10 is, if I recall, Jim Forte's minimum pricing for covers on his main site these days. |

@rustyc you must go to the postal history site (Jim Forte) and click on by state-Pennsylvania; then county- Lycoming and it's like the 3rd page in I believe.
@Paperhistory Thank you! Very helpful information and I am a cancel collector sort of by accident (a happy accident) but I been torn over this ever since I knew about it but I just thought the asking price waas a bit up there for what it was. However, I see your point on the nice strike so I'll have tto mull it over. You understand all too well that just because something is rare or hard to find does not translate into Dollars & cents sadly it's a supply & demand issue. I would like it for the cancel and the fact that it was sent from an interesting establishment during the late part of WWI. and almost the end of the steam driven turbine dynamo's that, of course, made electricity....basically I'm still on the fence. Besides I have an absolutely incredible purchase I'll be making soon that will blow your mind! It'll be one of the happiest stamping days of my entire life but it will take a long time before they're paid off and I actually have them in hand but no more of this speak off to make a payment now actually! |
