These overprints do not seem to show up in Scott, although the stamps are the common (lowest values) Vasco da Gama issue of 1898. Any information? My guess is they're a private charitable speculation.

They're official overprints. At least Yvert & Tellier, catalogues them (numbers 381/382).

Well, that's a good start, thanks. Michel? Gibbons?

What do these two catalog in Yvert? They are Mint OG, with multiple heavy hinge remnants; if they're not worth much, I'm going to soak them and get all that debris off the backs.

I'm sorry my Y&T is very old; so, I can't give you any figure. Perhaps next week when I go to my stamp club; there, the have the last Y&T issued.

I only have the 2005 Y&T, but the value was 2.75 Euros for each stamp, mint or used. Y&T says that these stamps were issued in 1926 and were a voluntary surtax supporting the building of a monument for Vasco de Gama. In searching, I found that this overprint also appears on the stamps of the Portuguese Azores (and also not in Scott), so it may also be on other colonial issues.
