I am having trouble identifying the regular stamps from the redrawn ones and would appreciate any help. Is this one J3 or J12 (which is what I hope!)

Correct Scot - the above stamps are either the earlier printing from 1895 - 1909 or the redrawn ones from 1916. |

Ponso1- Here is a definite redrawn example. Take a look at two things, in particular...the thick line around the lion (I've highlighted the area behind the lion's head, which is quite obvious, to my eyes), and the thick inside frame line running all the way down the left side of the design. |

I should point out that the right side of the stamp shares the same features...heavily outlined lion and thick vertical line at the edge. |

Cjd- appreciate the close-up image showing the differences. Scott gives a verbal description, but nothing like an illustration! |

yes Cjd thanks for the close up - now if only I could figure out whether my stamps are the redrawn ones! |

Ponso1, your 5c and 20c, at least, don't look to me like the redrawn stamps, based on the right sides of them at the edge design. There should be a much more noticeable thick vertical line.
My feeling is that the other two are not redrawn, either. Don't take my word for it, though. Hopefully someone else will chime in.
Jkj, I originally scanned the diagram from Yvert, which is a drawing of the same portion that I posted, but it just wasn't very helpful. As you say, an actual picture is so much better (most of the time), and I hope over time the majors switch from drawings to scans where it is both feasible and useful. |
