I found this one and thought that this was an awful long way to go to get some mutton. 12,030 miles in 1882 must have been quite the trip. I wonder how/where they got all of the ice to keep it frozen that long? I guess the English were gluttons for mutton?

An interesting story about that shipment is at this link ... and it reportedly took three months (98 days, according to Wiki) at sea to deliver it!

Interestingly, the ship Dunedin and their crew were later lost in 1890, presumably after having hit an iceberg.

As a small nation surrounded by water, New Zealand has relied on ships and vessels as a means of transport for as long as it's been inhabited. The 2012 'Great Voyages of New Zealand' stamp issue featured five vessels that have played a part in shaping New Zealand - including Dunedin which sailed from Port Chalmers to England.

With all those icebergs nearby I suspect getting ice was not a problem.

I found the Lamb covers - I knew they were somewhere

I've seen this one advertised on ebay at $NZ39 (without the insert).

My cover has the original insert which explains the lamb export industry. An interesting read

Insert - rear

Cover and front of insert

I also have this AEROGRAMME

"Miracle of Refrigeration". How in the world did we survive without it? I'm not too keen on mutton, but I'll defrost a good steak anytime!

Excellent timing, Warwick. I'm off to New Zealand at the end of the month for a quick vacation. My goal is to see as much as possible, enjoy the food, and pick up some souvenirs, which are usually stamps, in my case. I also plan on trying to stay as warm as possible, going from the Northern Hemisphere to the Southern, this time of year.

Lamb Chops sound fantastic!

Had a great week and back to the States tomorrow. Did not buy any lamb chops, but did have a lamb burger. Favorite was the Pavlova desert ... Excellent!
