I'm not sure how widespread the alleged counterfeit operation was, but this article does suggest that some counterfeit Lady Liberty/Flag postage stamps are out there:

http://7thspace.com/headlines/43925..._stamps.html

The wording of the article also demonstrates just how efficient the US Government is run:

Quote:
The investigation was conducted by the United States Postal Inspection Service, Boston Division, under the direction of Inspector in Charge Kevin M Niland; the Federal Bureau of Investigation under the direction of Acting Special Agent in Charge Richard M Frankel; and the Department of Homeland Security, Homeland Security Investigations, under the direction of Special Agent in Charge James C Spero.

Seems like an awful lot of "Special Agents" involved for a minor counterfeiting operation. But then again, maybe it's a lot bigger than we think?!

Probably the result of old laws regarding postage forgeries and a chance to get one's name in the paper.

Another more general article here:

Does anyone out there have these on mailed covers? I have never see the "returned to sender counterfeit postage" sticker/stamp. I'm pretty sure I dont want to commit a felony just to get an example, but I'd love to see one if anyone out there has a scan.

"It's not common for people to be selling USPS postage legitimately at a discounted price," Romano said. "These ads could potentially be scams as well, where they lure you in with an offer that's too good to be true and you get something other than what you were expecting or never get the product at all."

I supose that is somewhat true if you are talking about recently-issued postage stamps. Otherwise, this happens all the time.

Smauggie: They obviously have no clue about the discount postage market for excess mint stamps.

eyeonthewall - The USPS is happy to make legitimate discount postage sales look spurious. That way people buy the new stuff from the USPS instead of from dealers/collectors.

Is a counterfiet stamp considered a cinderella?
