Now, I bring to the community, something that might appeal to Canadian collectors as well as First Flight Covers: a cover from the first flight from St Johns to Botwood to Fogo on March 10, 1921.

It has a nice cachet and cancels on Newfoundland #117.

It is listed in NSSC as FF6 and in AAMC as FF6. My research shows that all of these covers were canceled on either March 9 or 10 in St Johns (as is this cover).

But my research shows that all the covers were back stamped in Fogo on either March 25 or March 26.
This one appears to be back stamped on March 28...?

Not earth-shattering but I thought someone might have an opinion on this being a minor rarity.

Or just enjoy !

Interesting cover alright tommy.

I only have the same information that you have. This is the first one I have seen from this flight.

Take a look at this site, that would confirm the flight to Fogo for March 28:

Here's a twin, backstamped "Fogo 3/28/21"

Here's one from stampauctionnetwork:

Seems that March 28 and Fogo are not uncommon (among these particular covers...overall, probably pretty uncommon...)

Neat cover.

On March 28, 2011 Bombardier Aerospace tweeted the following:

Quote:
On March 28, 1921: First airmail in Newfoundland was flown from Botwood to Fogo, by F.S. Cotton in a DH9 aircraft

Thanks to both of you. I guess it seems that the back stamps are March 25, or 26 or 28th.
Cjd: the links you sent are informative and thank you. The stampauction network is inconclusive to my query because it doesnt show the back stamp. the reason that I am focused on this is that the flight by Cotton and Plaistowe (which included a trapper named Kean) landed on the ice at Fogo after taking off. It apparently arrived March 24 but returned the 28th, thus the window of various backstamps. All have March 9 or 10 from St Johns (and the flight went through Botwood).

Lastly, CjD : I believe your quote is inaccurate. This was not the first airmail in Newfoundland by a long shot. The first was 1919, and there were 5 others prior to this one. Perhaps the Bombardier tweet is corporate spin because the earlier flights were Sopwiths, Vickers-Vimy, Handley Pages and then the de Havilland 9. According to AAMC.

But thanks, I've updated my notes to reflect the backstamp as not unique.

Cheers

I'm sure Bombardier's tweet could be corporate puffery, but I thought it was useful that it supported the date of the backstamp.

The auction listing references the backstamp date. It would be nice if it was pictured, but the text seems likely to be reliable, based on the rest of the information.

Thanks for the book pointers. I have the first one and love it.
I've never hear of the second one, but will get it right away, as reference is part of the fun.
Cheers
