My local newspaper, The Oban Times, is celebrating 200 yrs of publication by printing excerpts from the last two centuries in each weekly edition. I found this, from 1919 Out of interest, does anyone have a copy of the stamp described to show here? Thanks!

This makes for an interesting conundrum. The newspaper article is dated May, 1919. My information could be somewhat dated but the stamps shown are, I believe, from the June 9, 1919 Alcock and Brown flight issue (Newfoundland Scott#C2), which do indeed have the "one dollar" surcharge on them as the article states and the stamps show. Given that the newspaper article is headed May 19 would it not refer to the April 12, 1919 Hawker flight that was the 3 cent Caribou overprint(Newfoundland Scott#C1), an extremely valuable stamp by any measure. Then again the May 19 date may be there just to misdirect someone like me. |

it sells for 149Pounds on e-bay. Reply to Cynical: You make an interestind point, but the C2 is the only one describing the surcharge correctly. (The C1 refers to "April 1919" instead of "1 dollar") For further information, I thought I'd propose the following store that describes the events leading to this 1 successful flight (and the preceeding failed one (the Hawker and Grieved that landed at sea and which was the originating flight for the Cariboo overprinted (C1) http://www.century-of-flight.net/Av...ntic%202.htm |

Stampgal, Nice historical reference article. Thanks for the background. I have several varieties besides the standard C2. The images of my stamps are below, and its easy to get lost in the differences, so here are some comments. The C2 has a normal sized comma after "POST" and a period or full stop after "1919". The C2a is missing the comma but has the period. The C2b is missing both. The C2ii, has a little tiny comma. There are other variants Enjoy |

tommy, your Newfoundland airmails are great! By the way, what album(s) do you store your Nfld stamps in? |

yakboomer,
thank you. I only collect newfoundland and so have sort of a bent, but deep, focus.
here is my album approach:
1. I only stick with Lighthouse products and they can be found on the web. 2. For my main album, I have the Springback-binder (DL Lexus) system. 3. Then I went with the Lighthouse pre-printed sheets for Newfoundland. They have synced with Scott, so a mount for every main number. I recommend the SF protective mounts, which come on white-manilla acid and wood free paper and each stamp has a clear non reflecting little pocket (front and back) that holds the stamp firmly but is easily seen. 4. I then ordered a bunch of non country specific pages called LB pages, and here you can get like 15 different flavors (from an entire sheet, to 3 rows to 8 rows etc. I have these in the back of my country sheets for my varieties. This is the one above on this thread that you see. They are great because you can easily see the front and back of the stamp with a flip without touching. I then write on the page itself the notations of each variety. 5. My covers rest in Lighthouse cover albums. 6. All my surplus stamps and used sit in standard Lighthouse stock albums

tommy, the way I do it is 1) select and copy the text you want 2) click on reply to topic link at top of page 3) in the new reply area click on the second icon from the right, if you hover your mouse over it you will see "Insert Quote". 4) position your mouse between the resulting '[ quote][/quote ]' 5) shift-insert, or right click and paste and there it is. 6) be sure and preview first before posting. |

Quote: Could someone teach me or explain how to put the Quote in the reply? There are a number of good FAQs available in the Stamp Community Support section of this forum, including one on how to quote. The FAQs are all set as "sticky" so they show up at the top of the listing. https://goscf.com/f/13Ryan |

Thanks for the tip--I feel like such an Idiot. Also, back on this thread topic: there is one of these for sale on this website by Eastern. And its the C2ii variant (with a tiny little comma). She is so cute and special.... Here is the blurb on it, in case one of you big Canadian collectors want to step up and open the wallet...lot #237 under Newfoundland "Key mint positional stamp showing the small comma after "POST" (Position 20 in the setting of 25 stamps), nicely centered with large margins and full original gum, VF NH" http://www.easternstamps.com/ |
