I know that using sealing wax on envelopes was pretty common on mail from the 16thC.onwards...Found these 2Oth.C covers with seals among my collection of covers.

Hey, I've got one too.
This cover was sent by the Bank of Montreal (who I'm working for now!) in 1906 from Fredericton NB to Boisetown NB.

The wax seals aren't clearly BoM like yours though. Probably private seals of the individuals at the bank

- previously shown.

To add to the thread. I have this example in among my Officials.

For your information, the government used sealed envelopes of this type for "Money Letters" which were sent when there was a bill to be paid but in an amount that did not, in someone's mind, warrant a cheque. I think that the Indian example has the word, "Money" in the cancellation. I suspect that banks used a similar rationale for the sealed letters. Important documents, on the other hand, were sent registered mail which, of course, cost more.

Just stumbled onto this thread (again), so I'll add a couple more wax seals.

Two from the Bank of Montreal, similar to the one above

And the Bank of Toronto (after 1955 the Toronto Dominion Bank)
