I would like to get any information about this unusual "sand dollar" like cancel. Its on Newfoundland #21 from 1861-2 but the cancel type does not appear in my Newfoundland Specialized Stamp Catalogue. Cheers

Looks to be a representation of the Union Jack . . the combination of St. Andrew's Cross and St. George's Cross. |

There is also the Cross of St Patrick on the Union Flag (the red cross saltire), but I think that cancel is called a sand dollar after the somewhat unlovely creature it resembles - one on post "Newfoundland Stamps 17-23 from 1861" along with a whole page of lovely early Newfoundland. Looks like an old hand made cork style cancel, and probably was intended to represent the union flag. This style of cancel is often referred to as a fancy cancel and was pretty common on 19th century issues from Canada and the other provinces.
Edit: Should add that they come in many different designs, basically anything you could imagine carving into the bottom of a cork. |

Helpful--thank you. So a cork made cancel--either inspired by Union Jack (cool connection) or a sand dollar (nice image!).
Does anybody know of a website or physical book that would have hard data on the types of cork cancels??
I'm thinking of something akin to Ludlow' RPO book on Canadian cancels.
(I was also the poster of this stamp on the other thread by the way) |

Remco, that is a very nice one! I believe it is an overprint, privately applied from maybe a lawyers office or a bank. I hope one of the revenue collectors will ring in and let us know something more!

The overprint is the J. Elwood Lee Co. They are fairly common, I even have 1 or 2. |

And I assume you do not collect revenue stamps? Otherwise it would be an larger number..
I will try to find some more info with the details given. Thanks again!
