This 1904 1 Peso from Chile has a hole in it.

The hole could be meaningless vandalism, but if it has some other significance I thought someone may be able to enlighten me.

My best guess is that it's a specimen stamp without the word 'SPECIMEN' overprinted or punched, but were specimen stamps produced with just a hole and no wording?

(And yes... I know it's a bit grubby at the bottom, that is how it came to me. But I'm interesting in learning more about it anyway)

In general, the Spanish word for "specimen" is "muestra," and stamps are thus overprinted. To me, a punched hole suggests usage on a telegram.

I would think because of the hole punch that there is a possibility the stamp was used as a revenue to show payment for something.

Nothing Stands out as it being a Specimen on this one. As Doug stated, When used for Telegrams they were normally punched similar. Could just be Damage also,

Just found this one doing a random search...

Thanks for the suggestions: Telegram or revenue use both go in the mix. Any other thoughts?

Your stamp with this kind of hole punch is a color proof, that printers (American Bank Note Co.) presented for final approval.

There are some of these stamps (color proofs) that will be auctioned soon in my country (Sociedad Filatélica de Chile auction):

If in addition to hole the stamp have the word SPECIMEN, they are stamps that ABNC kept in their archives.

These color proofs are difficult to find. Congratulations!

Ah... thank you again jurgesurcl!
It came with a small mixture I bought on ebay. It will now be correctly labeled in the collection.
Do keep me posted on the result these stamps achieve at auction.
Thanks
