Here is the next page from my collection, on a Lighthouse page.

I still need a little bit better centered on two of them.

Note the 28a and 28 and 29 are very similar and easily confused.

Also, a close up of my favorite--#25 (Scott numbering). Hard one to find mint, NH and well centered. But hey, I'm biased.

Fantastic Tommy.

There are some very nice items in there.

I really prefer the classics over the modern issues.

Thanks to all.

I've only been collecting Newfies since 1972

I'm in violent agreement with you Bujutsu--the new ones just don't have that zing and zest.

I'll post another page tonight, but as you appreciate the upcoming years will be not as appealing...

I'm by no means an expert but focused and happy to take any questions or share any information I have

Cheers

I must admit the seal is one of my favorite Newfoundland stamps.

I have a semi-related question, that occurred to me recently. I was sorting through my so-far unsorted Canadian pile. My stamps come from all different sources, family albums, ww assortments, etc. I very much enjoyed the Newfie stamps, which amounted to a stockbook page or so. However, I did not find stamps of any other provinces. Are Newfoundland stamps really more common than the other provinces, or is it just chance that I have some Newfoundland and none of the others?

Stampgal, the other Canadian provinces all stopped issuing stamps on or before 1871, depending when they joined confederation. Newfoundland joined in 1949, so stopped issuing it's own stamps then. That is why you see many more Newfoundland stamps - they issued quite a few stamps over the years.

Great stamps, Tommy. I particularly like no. 30, the yellow-orange schooner. I think this is a stamp that will increase in value over time. I have two copies now and bid on any well-centered copies that I see under a certain price. The two "seal" stamps are also becoming hard to get at reasonable prices and I always watch for them.

Re: the question pertaining to other Canadian Provinces, there are quite a few items from New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island that are available on auction sites but the prices seem to be rising, especially for multiples. Recently, I have acquired a few stampless and stamped covers from pre-1867. Covers from PEI seem to be really scarce and I would really like to see any owned by other members.

I think BeeSee is spot on, but its a great question.
I can tell you that there are about 330 main variety stamps for Newfoundland and no more...so "quite a few over the years"
Though presumably well below the 1000s for Canada, eh?

Tommy, I found one in my collection you dont have ! I actually bought this a while back from a big stamp dealer selling it as a 28a mint no gum. I'm not sure if it is a 28 or 28a but, it is a 28i, the chin strap variety and it has full gum with a hinge remain.

Your Newfoundland collection is a hundred times better than mine.....

Coriandre,

Excellent! One of the points of me sharing was to spark and see what others had that I didnt.

sort of "I'll show you mine, you show me yours..."

I've long coveted the chin strap version, and have dreamed of finding it as you have (from an unaware dealer) and having the pleasure of knowing something they don't. This is on my short list of supplemental nice to have. In fact, just last week, I secured 88c (a very hard to find perf variety)...will post later.

Thank you for your compliment on my collection. the only reason it might be better, is because that is all I collect, so all my money and time go into only Newfoundland

Cheers

I wonder if you might post an enlarged closeup of the chin strap.

Coriandre,

Again--love your stamp, really a treasure from 1870/1894.

In case this is of interest, here are some additional tidbits on the stamp from my perspective:

1. I think it is pale red brown version or 28i. In My Humble Opinion (IMHO) it is not the brown version (29i)
2. Though you should see if there is a watermark, as that would be 29i.
3. Also the paper could be a tell: 28 is supposedly on thin yellowish paper and 29 on stout white or medium white paper. hard to tell though
4. IMHO, while it is hinged and Fine, I would still put the market value around $200+ based on the NSSC which puts $485 for a Mint top value (NSSC uses auction and dealer actual prices). Unitrade has Catalog Value of $100 but because Newfies are scarce and overbid by fanatics who have to have one; and I'd certainly pay this amount to check the box.

A nice stamp. Thanks for sharing

Tommy,

Thanks for all the great info ! It is a 28, I do have a mint 29 and the difference is obvious. The shade of the paper is hard to tell but the one on my 29 feels a lot stiffer. It is not watermarked....I thought 28 and 29 were unwatermarked ? Thanks for the estimated value.....a lot more than I paid for it (30$). Here is a closeup of the strap
