Hi lindseyr702,

My advice is to avoid stuff like this, it will already have been picked over for the nice stuff, leaving just the dross. If it was any good it would have been split down into separate items for sale. There will be a lot of duplication of what appears to be common GB stuff which is pretty near worthless, and mostly unattractive. Please see my reply to you about modern GB stuff on your other post. Apart from the buy price, the postage is double that again. And you will have to spend considerable time soaking, drying and flattening the stuff. If you want to buy a lot of stamps to assuage your sorting compulsion, have a look at some album collections and check them out for decent material. There will be little or no duplication. Avoid kiloware and spend your huckleberries on better stuff. Quality not quantity.

Terry

Mostly stamps NOT to be found listed in Stanley Gibbons, I'm sorry to say. Stanley Gibbons do not list any used GB decimal stamps having anything other than a CDS. No wavy lines, no slogans or part slogans, no inkjet cancels... which is actually the vast majority.

A direct quote from the Editor... "prices for used are for stamps with clean circular dated cancellations and not partial slogans, wavy lines or ink-jet postmarks."

Prices have increased for used GB decimal stamps in the latest GB Concise catalogue reflecting the scarcity of this kind of material as the vast majority does not meet the criteria.

Edit... I should say that my source is Gibbons Stamp Monthly, December 2013 page 108 - Catalogue Column Hugh Jeffries reports.

Hi scotzm

What SG is implying is that catalogue prices for used examples, other than those for clear CDS cancels, will be lower than the prices given for clear CDS cancelled used. It relates to the quality and condition of the used stamp, not a variety of the stamp, which those other cancel types are not. Nothing unusual in that.

From reading Hugh Jeffries report it is clear that Stanley Gibbons does not catalog anything other than CDS for used GB decimal stamps.

The catalog price shows that and there is no section for other types of cancellation (other than FDC covers). Of course there are other types of cancellation which might have some value but the Stanley Gibbons catalog price is for "clean circular dated cancellations" only.

There is no formula for calculating what a stamp might be worth in any other condition so any value is up to the individuals involved.

Does this only apply to GB, or are all used stamps in the SG catalogue valued assuming CDS cancels?

What about used with no/ultra-faint/tiny cancel?

This would apply to used GB Decimal stamps. Stanley Gibbons will sell stamps with "clean circular dated cancellations". That is the condition of their cataloged used stamps. Faint, tiny, non-existant, ink-jet, partial slogan cancels are not cataloged.

A quick look at my SG Great Britain concise catalogue for 2009 gives......

"...prices for used stamps are for postally used examples."

And Scott's has this to say....

"Unusual cancels on used stamps (particularly those of the 19th century) can greatly enhance their value."

Which just about covers the different cancels that might be found. Obviously price will vary depending on the appearance, type and desirability of the cancel. Usually for me, the most desirable cancel is the clear CDS type, but other types have got my hand in my pocket. However, slogans, partial or not, wavy lines and ink jets have no attraction for me

I wonder at the size the catalogue might be if every known cancel type for every listed stamp were included. Surely the price obtained for a cancelled stamp really depends on what someone is prepared to pay for it. That is, should they want it.

The Australia 2006 Commonwealth Games set of 50c x 125 stamps. Most people would call it a set 50c x 107 stamps.

Catalogue $1 mint or used. But the truth is a used set can be worth 800% more than a mint set. Yes a rarity where used is worth more than mint.

But this stamp with its cancel is worth more again. It carries the 2006 Commonwealth Games slogan cancel.

First time I have listed the Australia 2006 Commonwealth stamps and a set.

Auction starting price per single stamp $4.99 all sorts of cancels with 2006 slogan cancel $6.99. All up 65 single listings.

The used set of 50c x 125 stamps auction starting price $375.00

In a week I will know if my research is correct.

Info to finish what I started.

Out of 56 lots listed at $1.99 auction style.

53 lots sold mostly at $2.45 some for more, some for $1.99

10 lots last week for $4.99

That is for stamps with a cat value used for $1 each.

Will keep the other 230 used stamps, 107 different for a time when I need to fill a income short fall.
