As Terry mentioned "...prices for used stamps are for postally used examples."

An updated version in CBS 2014 has the following from the editor...

"It is a common fallacy that the prices in this catalogue show what a stamp is worth, should you wish to sell it. They are, instead, the price at which Stanley Gibbons will sell a fine example of the stamp in question..."

"The prices for all British stamps issued after 1880 assume used stamps to be cancelled with a clean, clear circular datestamp."

No room for ambiguity there now, I believe.

There is nothing wrong in taking the Stanley Gibbon meaning for the term used.

So long as you do not think that the rest of the world or someone from inside or outside the UK selling to someone in the UK should share your same meaning to the term used.

The term used means to me!

Used can mean from 1st Day Cover, Maxicard, by mailing, cancelled to order, special cancels and no gum or cancel etc.

But I am not telling you to take on my meaning for used and I do not need to take on your meaning for the term used.

Everyone has a different meaning for the term used so in my description area I tell people what used means for my ebay listings.

This is a very good issue to bring up. The term used in a global sense really challenged me to think long and hard about it all!

We really need to look at a stamp to see if it fits into our meaning of being used.

Quite correct. What I quoted was Stanley Gibbons version of what they have in their catalogs. Anyone wanting a S.G. catalog value should bear in mind that their catalog is also a price list (the last major catalog which is also a price list) and that the S.G. catalog values are clearly defined as being Fine stamps with a CDS cancel.

I fully and totally apologise!

My intent was not to call you a liar.

I have no doubt that it is what Stanley Gibbins has in their cat, even though I do not own a SG Cat.

I cannot see why the apology!
"This is a very good issue to bring up."... there seems to be many versions of what is "used" and what is "catalog value" depending on what people have at the time and Stanley Gibbons have their formula for those terms.
In the context of the original posting regarding kiloware, I would assume some kiloware dealers would quote a "cat val" of xxx as being a marker for their trading when in reality much of their product falls far short... in many cases very far short... of what is held to be an example. That's not to say that kiloware is without rewards as many collectors enjoy the hunt for elusive items or variations.

Thank You scotzm.

Yes it has been a very good, issue discussion, especially concerning kiloware.

I saw a beautiful large collection of used UK machins. The cancels were all the same type in the same position on the stamp.

The cancel type was the small circle with an oblong tail attached. I call them comet cancels.

It took that collector over 20 years of sorting kiloware to put that collection together and it is totally amazing.

Similar to kiloware I suppose is bundles of envelopes with common stamps that I pick up here and there at craft fairs and car boot sales.
Nice to occasionally pick out a decent postmark or two for the cost is pennies.
This GB cancellation is "comet" like but I have been using "sputnik"
as a description...I think it dates from the 1960's
