Initially, I had thought I had a Scott #4 w/maltese cross. It's imperf (obviously!) with small crown WM and horizontal lines above and below the vignette. My issue here is with the bluish paper... from the front it looks slightly bluish but from the back, the paper appears white. What do you think is going on here?

It's very genuine. The blue-ness can vary a great deal... "more or less blued" is what is mentioned in Stanley Gibbons. A chemical in the paper and possibly the ink, when wetted, caused a blueness which can be very patchy and doesn't need to affect both sides of the stamp. Nice stamp.

I can reconfirm what sctozm stated. I've seen examples on very blued paper to a very patchy light blue.
