This stamp appears to be too good to be true, it is offered for a very low price and I suspect it is not the real deal. The listing does say LH. I would appreciate any opinions on it. Thanks!

It does look very nice.

I do not have any to compare to it however.

Any online anywhere (eBay, BidStart, Delcampe, auction sites?) to compare with?

Puzzler, I compared it to tommy's page of Newfoundland airmails and it looks to me like the overprint is a little slanted, but I could be wrong. Perhaps tommy will see this and chime in. Thanks for looking.

Hmh Yakboomer....

My first instinct is that it does appear to be too perfect. I would be suspicious. This stamp should be compared very closely to the overprints of others (and I will look at it compared to the many that I have if you send me the jpeg). It could easily be a real stamp with an LH but the overprint is the fake part. make sense?

In this case, if I were you, the context means everything. Where did it come from? Who is the seller? A known firm could tip the scale to a good answer. A seller on ebay would tip it the other way, in my opinion. How much of a bargain is it? In this case, paying more (or closer to say 40% of catalog) might be counterintuitive but better to ensure its real.

if in doubt, i'd pass--as there are many of these available overtime

Thanks tommy, that was my first impression. It is listed on ebay, by a seller I have not done business with, for $72, which to me, is just too good . . .

This may not be a helpful comment but I'll make it anyway. I checked Ed Werner's 'Newfoundland Fakes and Forgeries" (available online). He doesn't mention fakes of this stamp but comments on forgeries of 128, the 3 cent on 15 cent overprint with narrow spacing. He says the fakes have greyish overprints which could be patchy compared to the real ones which are dark black. This stamp appears to have an intense black overprint but don't know if Werner's comment can be extrapolated to this issue. Like Tommy, I'd be inclined to look for this stamp from a dealer I know well.
