Does anyone know if Palo ever runs sales on their hingeless album pages, or whether there are resellers that have cheaper pricing? Sometimes merchandise is cheaper through other vendors than through the manufacturer.

Thanks.

Hi revenuecollector,

A company called Purves Philatelics in the UK seemed to have competitive pricing, but the early Egypt page set I wanted was only cheaper than Palo direct because it covered fewer years. I had considered Palo albums some time back but discounted them for this and other reasons. Their page size is large 10.5" x 12.5" or thereabouts, so would present me with a printing problem for their blank pages. There is no printed information visible on the pages apart from country title, and despite the large page size, stamp boxes are grouped so closely together as to prevent hand written notes being added. Too much money for too little for me. Which is partly why I make up my own pages now.

Egypt at the moment. Using one of my recently renovated Frank Godden album binders and hand written page layouts.

I have some Palo albums and liked them but lately some shortcomings have started to get on my nerves, the page size is huge- larger even than Lindner. For me it's easy to ding or damage a page this size just in normal use. They will not fit even in a wide printer and I don't think I can get special pages done on their blanks for covers, etc at a print shop- too wide even for them. They are based on the Steiner page program so that's why the boxes are bunched in the middle of pages- those were designed for standard size pages. I can go through a supply dealer and get a discount on Lindner or other albums. Palo is sold by them only at full retail. Seems to be little resale value- I've noticed some heavily discounted albums being offered on ebay by private collectors with seldom any sales.

For the most part I agree, and for countries that have availability, I'm still sticking with Safe albums, but where Palo appears to be of value is for those countries where none of the major brands offer hingeless pages, e.g., classic Mexico, Hungary, Romania.

If no one else makes hingeless pages for a country or era, I'm glad that Palo exists...

While I don't have any Palo pages, I agree with revenuecollector that Palo fills a large void that will only get bigger as the album manufacturers continue trim off countries with insufficient demand.

I haven't bought a hingeless album in a long time, so I take it Lighthouse no longer makes Mexico hingeless pages. I had a set of mid-20th Century Lighthouse hingeless pages from a Mexico collection I had purchased last decade. They were nice, but it sounds like I will no longer be able to buy the missing sections from Lighthouse. Oh well.

Palo's albums and pages are awfully high quality.

The size is a little different as has been noted, but in my view they sure are nice albums.

Someone pointed out on another thread that Palo albums are simply Steiner pages, spruced to up to look a lot prettier.

I heard someplace that the hingeless mounts on their pages are cut somewhat short, the tops of the stamps will protrude in some cases. Anyone verify this?

That has not been my experience, though I've only purchased pages from one country.

I recently bought a French Morocco collection at auction and it came on Palo premium hingeless pages. I love them. The quality is perfect and the layouts are familiar to me because I've been using Steiner pages for years as an interim solution until I found a quality album I liked. I collect the world pre-1970, so making my own pages is not really an option except for the occasional specialty piece.
Palo licenses the Steiner pages, and yes, as many have noted, they are just copies of Steiner with nicer fonts. But that's fine with me.
The Steiner pages have their issues - spelling errors, mis-sized boxes - but Bill Steiner always answers his email and Palo are very receptive to customer feedback as well, offering to replace faulty pages for free. Do any other publishers do that? To me, that's worth the extra money. I have resolved to slowly begin migrating my whole collection to Palo pages, presuming I can find the older, unillustrated ones (confession: I hate illustrated pages!) Sure, I'd rather spend the money on stamps, but for lots of countries I've reached the point where even a pricey album is about the same price as one more stamp, and so I'd rather postpone getting one stamp in return for the pleasure of seeing my collection housed in an album I'm proud to show off, rather than home-printed pages in a cheapo looseleaf binder.

can anyone take some photos on Palo album binder and post it here? I wish to have a look on the real photos, instead of those in their webpage.

Which binder? They are different, depending on which line of Palo pages you're talking about.
