An interesting read and it will prove to be a most interesting auction (assuming you have that kind of money!): http://www2.macleans.ca/2013/08/12/postage-paid/Quote: Later this year, through his own auction firm, Brigham will begin to sell everything off. Not one stamp will remain. "I'm old," he says. "I want to make sure I have the pleasure of seeing where they go."
It's a process that is expected to last more than four years, and will almost certainly see the collection broken up and dispersed around the world. "If you want to have the finest collection of Canadian stamps in the world, then you have to go to Brigham's sales and you'll have to have $10 million in your stamp budget," says John Jamieson, owner of the Saskatoon Stamp Centre and a philatelic expert. "I don't know any collector in Canada who has multi-millions of dollars to spend on stamps."

He's from Brampton. I'm from Brampton. Maybe I can convince him to join our stamp club. I wonder if he would put a few things in our silent auction??
Seriously though, wouldn't it be a real treat to spend an afternoon with him looking at his collection and hear the stories of how the collected everything. |

Hmmmm,ok, I'll take two.
Thanks for the url but I am sure there is a lot in that collection that is well beyond by pockets.
Certainly worth looking at though.

I'm wondering about his motivation for selling, thinking there must be more to the story. I'm only a couple of years behind him and the last thing on my mind is selling anything. Mind you, my paltry collection pales in comparison to his. Still, if you don't need the money and the collection gives you pleasure, why sell? With a collection of that value, he can leave instructions behind for his heirs as to how to dispose of it for maximum value. |

Or perhaps give it to the RPSC for a 10 M$ tax receipt, so his heirs will save 5M$ in tax, and ask that the RPSC exhibits the collections/themes to worldwide events to promote Canada and Canadian Philately across the world. |

Interesting but I did not see a complete list or catalog, nor a date set for this. Did I miss this, or is it just not available yet? |

The discovery of a third of Canada's rarest stamp no doubt has alot to do with it. It brought quite a bit of press for Canadian stamps. Doing it at this time was a shrewd bit of timing. It |

Given this news item I take it that this would not be a good time for me to put my collection on the market. |

Yes, the discovery of another Canada # 32 may have had something to do with it. This collection still appears to have the copy which is in the best condition of the three. However, those who paid several hundred thousand dollars for their rare stamp thinking that's all there was may be potentially upset with the fact that someone who found another one only paid around $5.00 for it as a mistaken Canada # 24 from a stamp circuit book. There's also the story which I am not sure is true or not that one of the two collectors offered the other collector several hundred thousand dollars to buy their copy and destroy it so that their copy would be unique as the only one. However, the offer was refused and I don't think that any government would allow the destruction of such a historic/cultural treasure by law. It also appears that the new found copy was found after its owner was soaking off a hinge on the back of a # 24 when he noticed horizontal lines in the paper as it was drying. This prompted his curiosity as to it being a potential # 32 so that he sent it in for expertizing to verify whether or not it had laid paper. |

The story of the threat to destroy the second copy of something collectable pops up in urban myth from time to time. It's makes for a good tale but I don't think it deserves much credence.

The "story" about the threat to destroy the other copy of the 2 cent Large Queen comes DIRECTLY from Ron Brigham himself! Source : Maclean's Magazine article which was posted by wt1 when this topic was started. http://www2.macleans.ca/2013/08/12/postage-paid/ Quote: A few years ago, Ron Brigham, who has amassed what is recognized as Canada's most valuable private collection of stamps, launched a bid for Canada's rarest stamp that says everything about his postage obsession, not to mention the surprisingly cutthroat world of philately. The 1868 two-cent Large Queen on Laid Paper, as it is known, is so rare that only two stamps were known to exist. Brigham already owned one, while the second, of lesser quality, was held by an American collector. One night in 1999, while the two men both happened to be in Australia, Brigham made his move, offering $300,000 for the stamp.
"Why would you want it?" the American collector asked. "You've got the other one."
"Because," Brigham told him, "I'm going to burn yours."
The owner didn't sell. And as Brigham sits in the basement of his unassuming home in Brampton, Ont., leafing through his collection—estimated by some to be worth at least $10 million—and retelling the story, it's hard to know if he was joking or serious. |

Now that there's another one making three in total, it would make that doubly harder and doubly more expensive to do. I am sure that there are some unique Canadian stamp varieties of which there is only one such stamp, but they currently are not as high priced since they may be more modern stamps. |

Brigham announced the reopening of his auction on or about April 26, 2013. This is when he announced the upcoming sale of his collection. The Greene Foundation didn't announce the third copy of the 2c Large Queen on laid paper until July 16, 2013. So it is unlikely that the third copy is influencing the sale of Brigham's copy. It will be interesting to see what it sells for. I hope they announce the result of the auction. |
