lorddenning: the article itself has the "wink" at the end:

"it's hard to know if he was joking or serious."

I don't think it was that hard to know, in my humble opinion.

I think if I had the most expensive #32 and I had sufficient disposable funds, I might be tempted to buy the second and destroy it.

I know this goes against the average collector's morals but some people who amass large valuable collections of stamps, coins, paintings or other art become more fascinated with their value and not the instrinsic beauty or the challenge of the search. I think Mr. Bingham still enjoys the collection for the same reasons we do. It is just unfortunate that we all can't get on the same plane as him.

Still, I'll plod on, looking for my ten-dollar best buys.

Actually, cornering the market by buying and owning all copies of a stamp, especially if money is no problem, is another way of controlling it including its price because there would be a few others who may want to also get it who also have the means to do so, but the supply is very short which can only raise the price upwards. Many speculators have tried cornering the market on some stamps at different times which resulted in artificial inflation of stamp prices because they were being hoarded and kept off of the market rather than being rare.

Sadly you'd be mistaken about that. if it's in private hands then it's unfortunately fair game. My thinking on this is because of a historical building in my old neighborhood was purchased with the intent to restore the building as per say the seller's agreement. 2 days later there was a hole in the ground. Everyone was shocked and people was saying almost the same thing- "why would they allow him to tear down such an important building?" I would have to imagine that the same would apply to stamps. If I bought a stamp from you I could do with it as I please correct?

With all the fuss about #32, I wonder if it will have any bearing on the value of my two #33s used F and used F-VF?

It may make interest in the laid paper Large Queens such as # 31, # 32 and # 33 increase which may result in their prices going up slightly more because of greater demand, but it could also make some take a closer look at # 22, # 24 and # 25 to see if they are # 31, # 32 and # 33.
