There is actually a stamp with Hitler, Mussolini and Franco on together. I remember under their pictures were the words Heil Hitler, Viva Italia and Viva Espana or something like that. Three truly evil dictators. I can't remember which country issued it. I have it somewhere. If you find any covers from the Spanish Civil war period going out of the country, grab them. They are extremely rare, especially coming to the U.S.. We were actually confiscating all that mail back then. What people did to get mail out of Spain back then was send it in bulk to Paris where it was repackaged with French postage and sent on it's way.

There's a whole 700 pages book listing around 2500 Spanish Civil War Republican Cinderellas. Many Spanish fascists cinderellas are also to be found; some of them quite cheap.

By the way, Franco may be dead since November 20th 1975, but his heirs are still rulling Spain. Just last week, Spanish Parliament (dominated by the far right "Partido Popular") refused to condenm Franco's regime crimes. They're even talking on withdrawing from the European Human's Rights Treaty.

Since it's apparent that lorddenning didn't pay attention in his social studies class Franco was a left wing dictator, and General of the Spanish Army that took over after a Spanish civil war in 1931.

Apparently you didn't either; Franco was a Fascist, just like the Nazis. They were right wing dictators, not a left wing dictators (Stalin was a left wing dictator). Apparently it never occurs to some people that a political group capable of putting up a sign that said "Work will make you free" over the gates of Auschwitz was capable of lying when they wrote "Socialist" in their name.
Like all dictators, they loved seeing themselves on stamps of all kinds.

Jeff,
I have a friend that did a presentation of the exact topic you are researching at our last stamp club meeting. He is a retired Social Studies teacher/ principal so he DID pay attention in his social studies class. If you send me an email with contact information, I will get it to him. I know he would be a fascinating resourse for you. Oh yeah and following with the theme above he is as far left as I am right, but a brilliant scholar that I am still learning from.

@ revcollector - Yeah I'm busted...I hated Social studies but I did get decent marks in my own defense. I'm a little surprised that info was so shoddy because I was actually almost quoting verbatum from the History channel's WWII. in color "the gathering storm" right about the middle if you want to hear for your self.

@ pjsstamps - I think I'll take you up on that. Apparently I need a refresher course in ...you guessed it! Social studies....
