OK, We've all heard of Benito Mussolini, Hideki Tojo, Adolf Hitler but was a stamp ever made with a portrait of Fransisco Franco from Spain (around 1932-ish)? I'd really like to see one if you have any. Also, Benito Mussolini if possible too? Thank you very much. -Jeff

Jeff

You have asked a tough question but I think there is a site called Gaggle or Googgo or maybe it's Gooogle. Anyway, what you do is, like, use your keyboard and type out words like Franco and Stamp. You then press enter. When you do that there are lots of other web sites that Googlie tells you about.

Who was this Francko guy anyway? Sounds like he was an actor or something.

Let us know if you find anything on Gaggle.

I know how to Google but I got tired of pouring over countless websites looking for a specific stamp. I know about the front profile stamp but that's not the one. This is a war propaganda stamp. Since it's apparent that lorddenning didn't pay attention in his social studies class Franco was a left wing dictator, and General of the Spanish Army that took over after a Spanish civil war in 1931. The idea was to dismantle the centuries old Spanish Monarchy. The King was forced into exile and a Republic was set up there. Franco and wanted to send his troops across the Straights of Gibraltar from Spanish Morocco (N.African Continent) to Spain for a land grab/reclamation and called on Adolph Hitler to assist. He did; He sent his newly instated Luftwaffe, more accurately. the Condor Legion to assist. The first German Panzer was also sent as Hitler was eager to try out his new armament. Mussolini also sent in 50,000 troops called the Volunteer corp and more than 700 aircraft. You get the picture but this is my interest in Franco.

I Love Stamps

Thank you for clarifying . It appears that you are wondering if a Franco stamp (local) had been released in the early 1930s. You have had no success finding out if such a stamp exists.

This site seems to have a comprehensive stock of Spanish Civil War items :

http://www.colectalia.com/

The Spanish Civil War took place from 1936 to 1939. Initially Franco did not lead the Nationalist forces.

Franco's military actions during the civil war and his subsequent dictatorship were repugnant and I refused to visit the country while he was still alive. His fascist regime was a blight.

Here is a 1965 Canadian cover featuring the Generalissimo:

ILS,
When I am searching for a stamp like this I type my search words in and then click on the 'images'. Gooogle will display it's search results with just images, allowing you to much more quickly identify what you may be looking for.

Franco was a monster. He permitted Adolph Hitler to field test his new Luftwaffe in a bombing raid on Guernica. The raid took place on the 26 April 1937, a market day, and lasted two and a half hours. The casualties were all civilians, men, women, and children. The raid was led by Wolfram Von Richthofen, cousin to Manfred Von Richthofen, but clearly having none of his cousin's code of military conduct. Even after the end of the civil war Franco permitted executions of partisans to take place in the streets. No Geneva Convention for those unfortunate men and women.

Franco may be dead, but I knew Spaniards exiled in London who feared returning to Spain even after he was dead. Such was their dread of Franco's legacy of hate surviving him.

Thank you for the Googling tip. I'm learning but understand I play vinyl records and reel-to-reel's...lol

There is no doubt about it he was a terrible person and done terrible things however I'm trying to put together a list of stamps that tell the story of the Gathering Storm of World War II. and unfortunately he's part of the story. I certainly didn't want to stir up any bad memories for anybody and good for you, that you got out and stayed out of that mess. Now I'm off to see in Finland has any WWII. political, propaganda or local stamps. Thank you again. Very sincerely -Jeff

ILS - the earliest stamp from Spain featuring "El Caudillo" was in 1938 and the scott # are 678- 689. He was a vicious dictator, but at least he was smart enough not to drawn into WWII even though Hitler tried very hard to get Spain into the war. Here is an ebay listing of one of those stamps of 1938:

I think I have it figured out. What I was seeing was a cropped postcard similar to the above with propaganda (Anti Franco). I did however find some locals from the civil war period. These aren't mine but I'm going to keep my eye out for some like them. Again thank you.

ILS- you also asked about Benito Mussolini on stamps, and I find the earliest Italian stamp set showed both him and Hitler. Scott #413 - 418. Il Duce and Der Fuehrer, what a pair! Here is one set on sale on ebay.
