WERT, this is the engravers signature (Gerald Trottier) a few other Canadian stamps from this time period also show similar signature. (Canada # 379)

see bottom left of the Champlain stamp for the initials of Gerald M Trottier

My father, Gerald Trottier, is the designer for this stamp and several other Canadian stamps (including the only Canada-US stamp). You can see more information on this artist at www.geraldtrottier.ca

Denise- Many thanks to your father for the great work and contributions to Canadian stamps. I can only imagine the work that goes into engraving and with that level of talent what else he may have created. Its an honor having you post with us.

Doesn't it make you yearn for the days when you could edit the title to reflect the thread's new-found focus, namely, engraver Gerald Trottier.
