Hi,,does anyone have a Scott #261 that can look to see if they have a smudge on the pole in this factory..??

The 50 cents munitions stamp is an excellent example of how engravers translated photographs into miniature works of art.



As you can see the so-called "smudge" was copied from the photograph used by the engraver.

Unfortunately engraving is becoming a lost art. Today's "engravers" no longer engrave by hand but create their intaglio images digitally. Anyone can be an engraver these days.

That $2 stamp shows a terrible portrait of our Queen on the right. There seems to be little respect for her in the postal service as she rarely appears now.
