As a stamp collector (philatelist), I have always been fascinated by the amount of literature that there is on almost every aspect of the hobby from the general catalogue to the specialized study. Most of these works are labours of love by their authors who spend more time and money putting their works together than they get back from any sales or appreciation that they may get or not get. This is an appreciation of their efforts to bring further knowledge to this hobby.
So true and also deeply appreciate those who do. Most of us will gladly purchase a good reference book but to do the actual research is something else.

Lovers of philatelic literature owe it to themselves to visit a philatelic library. These specialized libraries house a substantial number of very limited edition publications that just are not available anywhere else. In addition, the library staff are usually able to provide some assistance with research projects.
In the northeast USA, the American Philatelic Research Library is housed in the American Philatelic Society in Bellefonte Pennsylvania.
In Toronto, Ontario, the Harry Sutherland Library housed within the Greene Foundation is a worthwhile visit. (check the website for address and phone number and call ahead to ensure that access will be available)
