OK this morning I was surfing ebay and a certain listing caught my eye. It's listed as an investment opportunity but I'm obviously very skeptical...lol Maybe I'm just missing something but I would have assume it's completely worthless. What do you think? Oh yeah it has 7 bids already so what are they seeing I am not? It's listed as a #70A http://www.ebay.com/itm/70a-Early-U...em3387d8908b

My friend, Anything touted as collectible or investment or any other indication of potential money maker is a clear indication TO RUN!
Seriously, other than loved ones or seriously addled strangers, no one is going to offer you "investment opportunities" that even remotely have a chance of succeeding.
If I sound skeptical, Yup, that's me! |

LOL at "Old Yeller".
Steer clear of buying "potential", last I checked, potential wasn't in the catalog - and this applies to everything, not just stamps. |

Unbelievable but there have been 7 bids and it's up to $5.00. Time to auction off the rubbish bin I guess. |

Every stamp she is selling says investment opportunity. Looks like penny stock stuff. ebay should nix that type of advertising. |

She is definitely using words to get attention and with 7 bids it has worked so far. Tom |

30 bid retractions for the ebayer that pushed the top bidders price to $5. |

Well, that tells me someone is in cohoots with the seller - or it could be the seller from another PC.

The biggest investment in the area of stamps in our life time was back in the 1990's when dealers and especially the stamp auction firms had tons and tons of collections ,dealer lots and estate lots .There were stamp auctions were those huge accumaltions got one or luck to have two bidders trying for them .There were auctions were I was the only bidder left in the room while everybody else already left . I would fill up the back of a SUV for a few hundred dollars with boxes of stamps .It got so bad in the hobby I was throwing away nice albums ,complete sets of international after the stamps were removed. Don't even want to mention the glassines in boxes ,stock pages ,blank album pages ,dealer cards that were thrown in the trash . I am serious everything when into the trash because the closets in the house were stuff . Where talking about buying stamps in the tens of thousands and even a million stamps a year at a fraction of a penny and now ---now sell on album pages and stock pages for around 10 cents apiece on ebay . -------- all of you like to talk about investments in terms of one stamp moving up in price but the truth is that the bulk lots have gone up further in prices and in many cases they are returning 10 times the money----how's that for a investment that nobody saw coming when the online selling started in early 2000's . I am not talking about sand dune or bundleware stuff I am talking about general collectible stamps . |

floortrader that is interesting. I don't remember seeing that phenomenon in the 90's but then again I wasn't attending auctions or spending lots, mostly just viewing approvals through mail or visiting local dealers and perusing through their stock. I will say I think the investment opportunity on bulk is overrated. People are listing stamps for 10c on ebay but they're not selling very many. Just do a search of completed listings; I'd wager that less than 10% of what is listed actually sells. It would take you until the year 2200 to sell a million stamps piecemeal like that. |

" people are listing stamps for 10 cents on ebay " sorry you misunderstood me .I was thinking more in the line of selling lots in the $100.00 to $500.00 per lot .Selling anything smaller would leave no time to work on my own collection .This past week I attended two stamp auctions during CHICAGOPEX and the prices for larger lots and the bulky end of auction lots continue to get strong prices, the high price levels are difficult for a few dealers because they all remember the pre-ebay days................I still believe those who purchased those large bulky lots at public auctions in the past can now put a few dozen or a few hundred in dealer cards or stock pages or items that were mounted on album pages could sell that type of material and make a huge return on their original investment . |
