Any ideas what this cancel is. An ear of corn, a bird or a cross of some sort?

Westport, Ct. Weather that a Fleur de lis or an X is up for furthur research. I'm betting that you could find out something from a clue here - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Westport,_Connecticut

1st problem is to determine what state its from, then someone would have better luck looking it up. My reference is the "United States Cancellations 1845-1869" (Skinner) but this is more recent than that.

Connecticut. It's clearly not WA. or PA. Appears closer to CT.

Is there a place on the web that is good for postal history? Would there be info on cancels used at particular post offices?
I_Love_Stamps I see the wiki link you posted I will search that for postal records.
