Hi, I haven't had much time to peruse all of the forums here, but I was wondering if anyone has any ideas for donating some of my duplicate (US and World) stamps to a worthwhile organization, such as a veteran's organization or something similar. I don't know of any specific organizations like this. Most are off-paper but I do not think that any are particularly valuable. Perhaps a thousand or so stamps in all, maybe more.
Thanks for your help...

Hi Jimbob,
That is very good of you.
I expect that any organization that you donate your stamps to will either sell them directly or place them in an auction. In either case the revenue that they will end up with will be reduced by the amount of effort and time that will need to spend in getting them sold.
If you want to maximize the money that you can provide to your selected charity, then I would recommend that you make the effort and sell your stamps, either directly to a collector, or place them on a website auction site (ebay, bidstart, delcampe, etc..) and then donate the actual money you receive.
All the best! -stamporator- |

The American Philatelic Society (APS) is always looking for donations for their children programs. The stamps would go to a good cause and not be resold. Tom |

I second what Tom said. The APS could use them for their Stamp Teach program which is geared towards teachers using stamps in their classrooms to teach different subjects. The APS also send out stamps to members of the Young Stamp Collectors of America club.

Thank you all for your help. I think that the APS donation is the way to go. I will try to find out the shipping info from the APS website. Question: Do you know if I need to become a member of APS to donate?

Jim,
Here's their address:
American Philatelic Society 100 Match Factory Place Bellefonte, PA 16823, USA
814-933-3803 • Fax: 814-933-6128
The ladies in charge of the youth program are Janet Houser and Gretchen Moody.
You do not need to be a member to make a donation, but it's a fine organization to be a part of!
Thank you for your support. |

IBFS-
I didn't mean to ignore you! You must have posted while I was looking for the APS address.

Great topic. Thanks for the information. Just yesterday I won a box lot on e-bay and I am sure I will have much to give away. These are some great leads.
Thanks again. |

If you live in or near a town with a philatelic library, consider making a donation to that entity. I'm fortunate to live in Colorado. Just before the end of the calendar year, I took an unwanted stamp album, with some remainders within, to the Rocky Mountain Philatelic Library. I also donated some old Scott catalogues.
I agree about the APS, but I give them money rather than goods. |
