According to an article I saw in Canadian Stamp News last week (sorry, there's no link to it on their site), if you're using up older denominated stamps, they will need to total $0.85, not $1.00. The $1 rate is for when a customer wants to buy a single stamp, and there will be a specific $1 stamp for this - not a "P" stamp, which of course makes me think that HST is NOT included in the price.

I'm not too worried - I'm still working on the roll of "P" stamps I bought in 2007, and at the rate I use stamps I will still be using that roll for at least another couple of years (unless my wife finds them when she wants to send cards at Christmas).

All postage is taxes additional.

A new $1 baby wildlife definitive will be available on March 31 for single mailings.

If you apply your own postage, whether it is any P stamp (including new ones being released on the 31st, or any of the older ones which are coming back on sale) or any other postage, it is 85c to mail a letter.

The new 22c butterfly insect stamp is for anyone who has any 63c stamps still leftover (i.e. 63c plus 22c equals 85c).

A friend of my told me months that "P" actually meant 'paranoia'; I can see why by the discussions found here.

In addition to new changing and increasing rates in Canadian postage stamps coming up, there will also be a rate hike in Canadian domestic natural gas prices too.

Thanks guys. I called Canada Post this morning and confirmed what you guys have already stated, that if I use old cents stamps, the rate is 85 cents. Glad to know, but quite frankly I still think the information on the website is VERY misleading... why is it showing the domestic letter rate as $1.00 when it's actually 85 cents?? To me there's a difference between the postage rate and the cost of the stamps. If you look at the rates on the side of the mainpage, it says $1.00, this is wrong.

Jogil - yes they are blaming the cold weather/crazy winter on that... natural gas, propane etc.. everything is going up. *rolls eyes*

It looks like Canada Post is taking a page out of other marketing areas. The advertised price is this ($1.00), but a discount is available if you buy in bulk (85c per letter).

The new March 2014 Postal Prices rate sheet shows two entries in the grid: "single stamp(s)" at $1.00 and "stamps in booklets/coils/panes" at $0.85.

By the way, when I went to purchase the new Permanent(tm) coil today, the post office said that it could only sell full rolls. By showing my Venture One card, they gave me a 5% discount on this roll. And, apparently, rolls of either 300 or 500 Permanent(tm) stamps are coming in May (which will be discounted to Venture One customers).

I suspect Canada Post has found that selling one stamp takes considerable amount of time so they are encouraging you to buy in multiples, and will give a discount if you buy in larger multiples.

On another topic, the new $1.00 rolls have back printing at regular intervals (about very 10 stamps) that shows the name of the printer and designer.

Are those 0.65 cent stamps going to become scarce when they go to 0.85 cents soon since some were only issued a few months ago when the P stamps were put off sale until their price went up?

My argument is this... if someone needs to mail a letter and they already have some stamps, they're going to go to the main CanadaPost website to look at the rates, which are always right on the main page. Anyone doing this without knowing about the P stamps and such will see $1.00 as the rate and will put $1.00 worth of postage on the envelope. Just seems sketchy to me.

Only CP can cause a brain freeze for such a simple thing as a rate increase. Don't punish the consumer because he needs just one stamp and charge more. Surprised that they didn't throw in something about a extra charge if you purchase a stamp on Thursday. Let me see.....if I mail this letter I have to drive to CP to buy a single stamp or what the heck I will use the internet and send an email....definitely faster and cheaper.

Is it $1.00 flat or does one have to add 13% HST to it? If so can one only pay $1.10 total instead of $1.13 for it or is it $1.15 since the penny is no longer being used? Which is it? Get the confusion on top of confusion?

A $1.00 stamp requires 13¢ HST, less in the province of Alberta, and more in some Maritime provinces. So, in ONTARIO it would be $1.00 + $0.13 = $1.13 rounded up to $1.15. Let me see now, the published rate of inflation is less than 2%, and has been that way for quite a while now. So we better raise the postage rate by 34%, just in case, and give Pitney Bowes' meter users a 10¢ cut. How do we spell p-a-t-r-o-n-a-g-e!

Would that have anything to do with fact that Canada Post
CEO Deepak Chopra was President and Chief Executive Officer of Pitney Bowes Canada and Latin America
before getting that plum job with Canada Post?

No, it wouldn't be that. Must be just a coincidence. Integrity in government must not be questioned.

You must be right Berliner, they wouldn't be so blatantly
stupid about it.

Would they?

Just bought the 3rd quarter pack (and some other items) that I was missing. Nice that Canada Post did not up the price on these packs.
