Can folks recommend a good dual wave UV lamp? I prefer portable, and affordable. I've seen several cheap ones on the bay, but I'm afraid they're junk. I collect US and limited areas of WW right now. Suggestions? Comments?

Thanks.

I can't speak for the price, but this is the type of product most stamp collectors use. At least if you buy from Amos, you get free shipping (until 12/16/2013):

Thanks wt1. I've never ordered from Amos, but I know they are trusted, so I ordered one. At 59.99 with free shipping, I cant complain about the price! I'll post a follow up after it arrives.

Fimpster, the above UV light is made and sold by UV tools. Website is www.uvtools.com. The Amos UV light costs $44.95 from them!

My follow-up on this dual-wave UV lamp for anyone interested...

I've been using it all afternoon checking my collection for tagging varieties etc. My first impression was that it feels kind of light weight and cheap, its body is completely plastic. Once I put batteries in it, the added weight made it feel a bit more sturdy in my hand. It is small and compact and easy to manipulate.

The short wave UV lamp (254 nm) is not very strong. I guess that's to be expected from a low cost UV lamp like this. You have to hold the lamp only an inch or less (<2.5 cm) to really see the tagging on US issues. After some use its really not bothersome, just a quick wave over the stamp shows the tagging quite clearly.

The long wave UV lamp (380 nm) is somewhat stronger. Perhaps this is the nature of the differing wavelengths. On some Canadian issues I could hold the lamp a good 5 to 6 inches (12 - 15 cm) away and see hidden markings.

Overall I guess I'm satisfied. Considering price and performance I'd rate it a 'B-'

I use a Model UVSL-14P, Part #95-0188-01
by UVP, Upland Calif 91786. It has both long and short wave U.V.
and works great
