Well look what I just got today. A Bleeding Nose Variety Small Queen. Although I was wondering about all of the black around the top and bottom. Does anyone know what this black is all about?

I believe the black is oxidation, but I'll wait for others to chime in. I believe it is cleanable with diluted Hydrogen Peroxide for a very short period of time.

Partime is correct on both counts.

Not sure if I see any bleeding nose variety though.

While we are on the topic of bleeding noses, I thought I would add this one. I know it isn't the same as that started in this thread by Coinwatcher, but, thought it would still be appropriate.

On some of the earlier Canadian postal stationery, it would appear that Queen Victoria was in an accident, or lost a fight (she would not be amused - I know). Anyway, here are some images of full stationery and close-up views of the bad inking to give her the bleeding nose.
