A new one to my growing Newfoundland cover collection arrived (happy to have the illusive #79 the red Queen but I don't understand the cancel on the back. Paid E what? What is this? Where and why was it placed? The other two cancels from St Johns and NY are clear.

Tommy..leave the 1/2 stamp onnthe far right and remove the others...haha..cause a single Scott#78 on a cover is worth $750.00 according to Unitrade and less if there are stamps with it on the same cover.

It is a New York binocular (or opera glass) transit marking. It should read PAID ALL but the ALL under the E is very faint.

Thanks for teaching me, I'm not familiar with US cancels.

What does the "G" or "C" signify?

What does the "B" or "E" signify?
