Hello, I am seeking Scott number and value for this stamp:

The paper seems to be thin but this is not my area of collecting so any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thank You.

You'd have to tell us the color of the silk thread (almost impossible to tell from a picture). The choices for the thread color are emerald, yellow, and green.

Judging the thickness of the paper is sort of iffy, as it looks like it got pulled off a cover and pinned to a board (there are numerous thins, lots of rolled paper fibers on the back as if it had been rubbed/pulled, a torn corner, a pinhole...). Both the condition and centering make it a space-filler. I'm sure you already know, but for the other readers -- the actual retail value will be a very very small percentage of the catalog value. That being said, the possible catalog value ranges from $21.50 to $1600 in the 2011 Scott, depending on the thread color and stamp color shade.

Hello Brad,

We had an earlier discussion on a similar topic at https://goscf.com/t/27755 Check it out, as I have an example very similar to yours.

It should be noted that there are several occasions where the silk thread is not visible at all which, I guess, means that you may have to assume the least expensive variety unless you can prove otherwise. You can also see that there was some discussion concerning the impression (whether fine or rough) and the cancellation style.

As far as I can tell, your 5 rappen is of a Fine Impression which would probably make it a Scott 25 (dark brown) with, supposedly, a black thread.

Although not the best example (with the various faults noted by khj), I certainly do enjoy the "Sitting Helvetias".

Yes, I left out the "black thread" option. Thanks, Partime!

First of all I appreciate all the comments received, most helpful. Scanning at the highest resolution possible I see one area that contains what appears to be a small thread that is definitely green.
Given the very poor condition of the back and no other evidence of a thread I am very hesitant to call it a scott# 32. Interestingly, that is the number someone wrote on the back of the stamp so I guess they thought it was one. This came from a handful of old album pages I purchased on ebay and most stamps are the $.20 variety except for three or four others. Thanks again.
