hello I recently discovered that some mint stamps are stuck with used ones.if you look closely the mint stamp is glued to the used stamps that was placed underneath, well my english isnt so good so here are two examples of what im talking about any ideas how to separate them without damaging the stamp or the gum?i tried to freeze them but german stamps have a super glue or something soaking will eliminate the gum so I decided to ask you guys first before I "kill" a stamp.all sugestions are welcome thanks

Nothing you can do unfortunately. If the freezer trick didn't work then soaking is the only way to separate. |

Sometimes you can use pointed tongs between the stamps to pop them open if not stuck to badly. You have to do this very slowly and very carefully. Do not rush it. If the stamps partially unsticks, set it aside and try again later. Sometimes the humidity in the room changes in your favor and helps unstick stamps left out to dry on a table.
Good luck in your efforts. |

How long did you leave them in the freezer? You may have to leave them in there for a bit - don't be afraid to leave them in there for a few days. If not you can try what Timm suggested as soon as they come out of the freezer. Another experimental trick can be to take only the stamps affected in to another room and pump the room up with a humidifier and try to separate after a few hours. The problem is if you get to this point, you're going to trash the gum either way but at least you'll have some OG heavily disturbed.
If all else fails, you'll have to soak them. |

maybe 6 to 8 hours in the freezer without any result, this modern german stamps have a naugthy glue the freezer trick works fine with older stamps, maybe ill try the sponge trick because they are almost fused together. thanks for all the sugestions. found this if someone has a similar problem http://www.ebay.com/gds/How-to-unst...43832/g.html |

Hi gdr25, The solution to your problem might be to use a stamp sweat box. This can be used to separate mint stamps stuck together and to lift stamps printed with fugitive ink from paper and envelopes. No need to buy one as they are easy to make (and use). Good information here....... http://xes.cx/build-your-own-stamp-sweat-box/Terry |

gdr25 - the answer is as terence - suggests - but I'll add two points. First a sweat box is good because a stamp with "disturbed gum" - which is what you end up with is better than a MNG - a mint stamp with no gum. Second - experiment with this process. Do just one pair - preferably a less valuable pair. You need to get the temperature and timing just right. I've had both good and bad luck with it. |

Yes. I agree. You need to generate the right temperature of hot moisture rich air inside the box. Worth sticking with it and you will come unglued. No sweat! Terry |

If you put the stuck stamps between two sponges that have been filled with hot water, then the excess water squeezed out, you will create a humid environment in which it will be possible to separate the stamps after a few minutes. It is important, of course, to make sure that the sponges have been fully squeezed out! I read about this method here and can endorse it: http://www.ebay.com/gds/How-to-unst...43832/g.html |

That is an interesting variation on the sweat box, in which the two sponges are about an inch apart inside the plastic box and the stamps lay on a mesh between the sponges. I will try this method next time I get some stuck stamps. If it works and speeds up the process that has to be good.
