I have business clients that send me their work with stamps from the 70's to 90's - and stamp collectors do this for me as well - but I wonder if anyone keeps the covers intact for their interest level as opposed to trimming away the stamps. I know they have no intrinsic value but I usually toss them in a box for their curiosity or artistic feel.
In the UK all stamps post decimalisation (1971 onward) are valid for postal use, with the correct amount stuck on the envelope or packet of course. So I see nothing unacceptable about a 70s, 80s, or 90s stamp with a current cancellation. Nowadays finding a GB stamp postally used with a clear CDS cancellation is something of a rarity and to be treasured over nice MNH examples. They may well be the more valuable than the MNH versions someday.
