Quick question for our Canada collectors:
How much doubling is necessary to "count" on the KGV admiral provisionals? Is something like this enough?

I've looked at a few auction images to get an idea of the variation in doubling, and there is quite a bit of variation, but in all honesty, each of the ones I saw was more prominent than this one.

Opinions, please?

Though I am not an expert on this, I do know that it has to be more prominent than the example you show. Your example though certainly does show possible doubling. Whether it is worth a premium or not, I cannot say for sure.

Thanks for the thoughts, Bujutsu.

Anyone else have an opinion to share, too?

I am not an expert on that issue, but I think the partial doubling is caused by vibration during printing, the letterpress bouncing and partly hitting the sheet twice. A full double overprint may be caused by the sheet being put through the press twice.

Let me throw my two cents in here..I have had some experience with different printing presses...older presses were flat bed press...bottom half of the press was stationery...while the top half of these platnam presses opened up to allow the pressman to insert a sheet of paper..it would open you insert the paper..the top part would come down to make contact with print alphabetical words or design...IF the pressman was not fast enough to remove. the finished product..he would let it print twice..causing what looked like re-entries, or in you case a shifting of the paper on the second go round...yes..this definately could cause doubling.

Here is another scan of the piece in question. It is a pyramid guide block, where each of the stamps shows varying degrees of the extra hit, more so in the left column than the right.

I'm not sure this adds anything to the discussion, but if so, great.

I picked this up for the eye appeal in my KGV collection. I don't specifically concentrate on Canada.

I agree with BeeSee on this one as far as the doubling goes. The ones listed in the catalog are "true" double printings (overprint done twice on same stamp). Yours is more like a "kiss" of the overprint.

Having said that, it is still VERY collectible as such. And on a pyramid block as well. Very nice!
