Canada Post has introduced "underprinting" on their definitives. This is from the new Permanent(tm) Baby woodchucks coil issued yesterday (Jan 14/13):

The paper indicator within the inscription has an underlined C to indicate this:

All of the new Baby Wildlife coil and booklet stamps issued Jan 14/13 have this new paper.

The new Canadian Pride booklets of 10 and 30 released yesterday do not have this. But ... philatelic booklets to be released Jan 31/13 will have the new underprint.

----

Stop the press:

I have just heard that the 2012 Canadian Pride booklet, with the new underprinting, was shipped to Canada Post customers who have a standing order! (I will add a picture when I see it.)

This particular booklet could prove to be very elusive.

Can this be seen after printing or from the back or is the underlined C the only way to know?

You need to peel the stamp back a bit to see it.

I have not (yet) soaked one to see if the underprint remains. According to the Jan-Mar 2013 Details magazine, the underprint is "under the adhesive", implying it will still be visible after soaking.

I got one, came in last week.

Sorry for the picture, my scanner was not plugged in, so I took it with my phone.

Same bar code if anyone's wondering.

This type of "Underprint" is more a kin to a watermark then an actual "underprint".
This appears to have been applied to the underlair of paper before the printing of the actual stamp like a watermark.
"Underprint" correctly is an "Overprint" on the reverse side of the stamp can be applied on gum or on paper before gum applied to a pre-existing stamp!

I was thinking this was a re entering of watermarks myself. I'm sure the technical process is far different. I am wondering if it is a safety feature detectable by possible new equipment or when soaked will you loose the print. After the mass forging of the olympic and lighthouses P stamps to the tune of 12 million worth I can see reasons for security features. Also a quick search can usually fing lots of 100-1000 uncanceled no gum P stamps . There is huge loses that would make sense to add this feature if it is useful. However I fear this may be a huge variety creation that may drive sales as well. At least with the orientation it is pretty hard to say if sideways inverted underprints will ever be an issue. OR WILL THEY???

Why isn't this reprinted 2012 booklet made available on CP website so everyone has the option to buy one? I find it very frustrating the way CP decides who gets to purchase a product and who is left out and has to pay a premium to get one. I just went through all the product available for 2012 and couldn't find this particular booklet. Anybody have any info to share?

Phone the National Philatelic Centre (1 800 565-4362) and order it ... that is how I was able to get it.

Tell them you couldn't find it on the website and they may wave the $2 handling charge.

I heard the 2012 underprints are also available at retail postal outlets, sent as general stock. I will check locally. They may not be too scarce after all.

I just got back from my local mall, and they are available at the Retail Post Office there.

These booklets also have the corrected spelling of "Lueders". I wonder if the underprint also exists with the original spelling.

After a bit of research on SCF and other sources, it appears there are three printings of the 2012 Oh Canadian Pride booklet:

1) Original: Leuders spelling error, no underprint
2) 1st Reprint: Lueders correction, no underprint
3) 2nd Reprint: Lueders correction, with underprint

I have 1 and 3. Can anyone confirm 2?

The correction of Lueders takes place on the back of the booklet and in the micro-printing on the stamp.

(I don't know why we call these booklets, they are actually mini panes)

The "Leuders/Lueders" correction (before the underprint) was made available to collectors on Sep 28/12 (see the Oct-Dec 2012 Details, page 5).

A (very) brief mention was mentioned on this site (https://goscf.com/t/28948)

The Sep-Oct 2012 Corgi Times (page 26) discussed and illustrated the correction.
