I'm not sure if this has any possible connection, but the link below shows a Schooner owned by the return addressee of that cover (Hollett Sons & Co.) that was launched in 1938:
Bujutsu : Thanks, it helps--I was only looking for a ballpark range.
WT1 : wow! I loved that link, and while one can never know, it seems highly likely that this might have been the ship the cover was shipped from. i'm going to reference this in my collection as being possible. The year seems right too.
Wert : in 1968 my uncle who was a huge worldwide collector of stamps, got me into the hobby. He gave me an article from a stamp newsletter touting how Newfoundland (like a very few others) was a dead country and that no more stamps were being made and would be a good investment. My mother and father both had relatives there from 100 years ago. My uncle also guided me to stay only focused on it, as I think he got distracted in all other areas and I think regretted chasing an ever ending supply. The prospect of specialization rather than generalization appealed to me plus the possibility of "completing" my collection ...and my odd discipline has been forever codified. I also find it logical given limited time and money to focus them only on Newfoundland. Also, my economic background fits because I few the value proposition as strongly up over time--because again, there are a fixed number of stamps, and an increasing demand. Over the years, I have just gone deeper and deeper into the country, like amassing covers and books.
Lastly, I love the stamps appearance, and they touch over into history of flight, war, british empire, and Canada etc.
