The Walsh catalogue lists an aniline ink variety, but I am not sure if you have that or not.

You bet your bippy you can! I bought the online version so when I travel it is always on my laptop. I know that tommy, on this forum, strongly recommends it.

The Commonwealth Five Reigns catalogue lists deep ultramarine, only.

If you have access to a long-wave UV light you can probably answer the aniline question instantly.

Thanks for the post, as some of you know, I only collect Newfies...

1. As stated above, not to belabor the consensus : if one really wants to collect Newfoundland, you must have the Walsh NSSC. There is a new edition out, so take care to get the 8th or 9th edition. Prior editions are OK, but substantial changes were made from 7 to 8th, because the folks at Walsh do an excellent job in my opinion of listening to collectors and updating variants and even using examples.

2. I believe this one is a normal color variant within the blue for Unitrade and NSSC. I will check my stock (I have about 18 of this stamp, including 4 on covers).

3. The Aniline ink version is not a color variant, per se but a sort of bleeding of the ink around the wording. the image above is not an aniline version. It is a hard thing to explain, and you have to see it to understand it. I have previously posted two side by side comparisons of the aniline version of Newfoundland #270 on this community...I will search to find it and post the link here (unless someone else beats me to it).

Thanks--got any more Newfies to share?

I had a dog named Bippy many years ago. Didn't bet him, but lost him eventually.

The single stamp in the original post looks to me to have some violet in it. Maybe it just my computer.

The block of 4 appears to me to be blue ( or a shade thereof)

Coming back to the comment above regarding the Aniline version noted in Walsh/Butt's NSSC. That item is quite rare, and while I have never seen a version of it, I do have in my collection an Aniline variant of Newfoundland #270, with a comparison to the non-Aniline normal stamp. If you look in the lower right, you can see the two stamps and how the Aniline is blurry and bled into the white area.

I am assuming that the same would be for the #249 above, in terms of the Aniline version. So, if this holds, then we could rule out that your image is an Aniline variant of #249.

I will keep looking at my examples, but so far they look pretty much like yours, which is listed as "violet blue" in the NSSC

Wert,

Sorry to confuse you -- I was trying above to eliminate the Aniline variant.

You should get the NSSC by Walsh and Butts, but it will probably not clear this up. I've read it twice and there is nothing in there about this apparent color.

I have attached some of mine for you to see, and in my view, your color appears to be within the range of the catalog color--so not special (sorry). I sense that you believe yours is different and it is possible but probably unlikely. maybe your scan is slightly different, or it faded? or maybe you've struck gold? the only way to be sure is to submit it to be expertised by someone as a variant (or go to a store and physically compare with your eyes the colors).

I do not mean to offend by saying its not a unique color, it could be--I just tend to be doubtful on these old stamps which have been scoured for decades. I do not have handy how many of these were produced, but there were 250,000 left over by July 31, 1939 and they were re-purposed with surcharges of 2 and 4 cents--so a lot.
