This is my most recently acquired advertising cover. It was a gift to me from my Uncle Doug."The first American paint maker, Devoe founded USA 1754" Advertising Cover from Curwensville, Pa. but they have it spelled Curwinsville curiously? I recently lived in Curwensville and there is really nothing there anymore but I do enjoy local history so I was quick to accept it!

A very nice cover ... although the advertising caption reads: "The First American Paint Maker Devoe, Founded 1754" (not USA, although that's true, too.) Interestingly, the Devoe brand of paint is still around today!

Here's an excerpt from a New York City register of the old Devoe Paint factory that summarizes the history of Devoe Paints:

As for W.D. Gates of Curwensville, PA, checkout this link for another advertising cover that they used, this time instead of paints, it's for Alpha Portland Cement products:

Thank you WT1 for the correction. I couldn't make it out from the image so I just done the best I could to decipher it. Wonderful information many many thank you's sir! I'll be excited to get this in the mail! Then I'll scan it right so you can read it. I like that it's made out to the John Deere Plow Co. Syracuse N.Y.

Jeff, I saw a cover with the same corner card a couple of days ago either on E-Bay or Bidstart if you interested in another.

Covers for Devoe Paints with the Indian Motif are plentiful. I checked ebay and there are a couple currently for sale -- not from Curwensville, PA but from other locations. It seems Devoe Paints provided many stores with the same covers (i.e. Indian) and the individual stores merely added their local address to the bottom.

Here's one from Greer, SC (1917):

And another from Ballston Spa, NY (1914):

Notice the considerable variance in prices being asked for the covers. You have to consider the source. The high priced one is from Bills Bargain Stamps (a/k/a William Langs).

Interesting that the Ballston Spa cover is addressed to John Deere in Syracuse also....the must have been a steady Devoe customer.

I find it extremely interesting that Charles Pratt was involved. His primary interest at this time was both the Rail Roads and the Petroleum interests it held. I found that fascinating!
