What a fascinating thread! I would like to sincerely thank you for the exposure to these as I have always had a soft-spot for collecting Barbed-wire. I don't collect it myself but my Great-Grandfather did and he had quite the collection and if I remember correctly he had a sample from the very first barbed wire that was sold commercially and a few rather frightening examples from WWI. Those was really thought invoking to a little boy. Anyway thank you again.

I had to correct the word collecting to include 2 "L"s.

An Austrian novelist and radical pacifist Bertha von Suttner is the first woman to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize (1905)
and the second to be awarded the Nobel Prize.

60th Annivesary of Liberation of Death Camp Jasenovac

Jasenovac concentration camp was an extermination camp established in the Independent State of Croatia (NDH) during World War II.
Estimates of the total numbers of men, women and children killed there range from 300,000 to 700,000 (from 1941 to 1945).

Hand, barbed wire, and map of Cyprus, printed by lithography, and issued by Greece on July 10, 1984 as one of a set of two stamps commemorating the 10th anniversary of Turkey's invasion of Cyprus, Scott No. 1501.

Jewish Museum of Deportation and Resistance, Mecheln



The museum is housed in a former barracks from where Jews from Belgium during WWII were skipped to Auschwitz.
Between 1942 and 1944 25,257 prisoners were shipped from there to Auschwitz.
Only 1207 of these prisoners survived an inhuman captivity to see the liberation of the Nazi camps.

20th Anniversary of Battle at Perekop - 1940

The Perekop is strip of land that connects the peninsula of Crimea to the mainland of Ukraine.
In November 1920, during the Russian Civil War, a battle was fought here between Red Army and the White troops.

Giorgio Perlasca (1910-1992)



Giorgio Perlasca an Italian who posed as the Spanish consul-general in Hungary in the winter of 1944.
and saved 5218 Hungary Jews from transportation to Nazi Germany.
The State of Israel honored him with the title Righteous Among the Nations .
