I was able to track a bit (actually a lot) of information about the gentleman addressed on this cover by an ad placed in the Sacramento Daily Union that reads the following; ALWAYS IN ORDER AND READY FOR WORK. In the past ten years eleven thousand FLORENCE MACHINES have been sold by me on this co:i!.t, and no purchaser Ins paid me anything for repairs If there is a FLORENCE MACHINE within one thousand miles of San Francisco not working well, I will fix it without any expense to the owner. SAMUEL HILL, Agent, 19 New Montgomery street, (Grand Hotel Building), San Francisco. I will not bore you all with the details but Samuel Hill turns out to be an Entrepreneur, Abolitionist and is responsible for starting the first free kindergarten which evolved to what is known today as the "Hill Institute" in Florence MA. Here comes the stamp part; during his lifetime he had associations or business dealings with Sojourner Truth (Scott #2203) and Frederick Douglas (Scott #1290). He is mentioned in Sojourner Truth's book, "The Narrative of Sojourner Truth". I know there are better names on cover but I thought this one was interesting and it's in my collection. Now time to look at others...
I was wondering, will you mount this cover in your album along with the photo of the "Florence Sewing Machine" and a small write-up? It would dress up your page alright. This is what I do with my advert covers etc. Just a suggestion of course.
